An Integrative Overview of Barg-e-Gaozaban (Borago officinalis Linn): Insights into its Medicinal Potential

Abstract

Barg-e-Gaozaban (Borago officinalis Linn.), widely revered in traditional Unani medicine, holds significant therapeutic value, particularly in the management of Amrāḍ-i-Saudāvī (melancholic disorders). Classical texts describe Gaozaban as a potent cardiotonic, Mufarriḥ (mood-elevating), Muhallil-i-warm (anti-inflammatory), and Mulayyin (demulcent) drug used to address symptoms arising from an excess or predominance of Saudāʼ, such as persistent low mood, anxiety, palpitations, apprehension, irritability, insomnia, and other psychological and somatic disturbances.

This review synthesises classical Unani perspectives with modern scientific evidence obtained from reputable academic databases. Phytochemical analyses reveal the presence of flavonoids, phenolic compounds, essential fatty acids, mucilage, volatile constituents, and vital minerals, along with newly identified metabolites that may contribute to its neuropsychological and anti-inflammatory effects. Experimental studies support its antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycaemic, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective properties. Clinical findings further demonstrate benefits in conditions such as cyclical mastalgia, respiratory disorders, and stress-related symptoms.

Emerging evidence highlights Gaozaban’s role in modulating stress responses, enhancing emotional balance, and supporting metabolic stability—mechanisms closely aligned with the Unani concept of correcting Saudāʼ imbalance. Together, the classical and contemporary data affirm the herb’s therapeutic promise in Amrāḍ-i-Saudāvī, while underscoring the need for well-designed clinical studies to establish standardised dosing, efficacy, and long-term safety.
